medSPACE Set: UMAT Preparation Workshop

What

The RDWA has commissioned MedEntry to provide four one-day UMAT preparation workshops.

The workshops will provide students with an overview of the Undergraduate Medicine and Health Sciences Admission Test (UMAT), tips on how to approach multiple choice tests and time management strategies.

Who

In the first instance places are available for:

South Australian rural origin high school students who are completing Year 12 in 2012
South Australian rural origin applicants eligible to apply for medicine in the 2013 university intake (eg. through tertiary transfer, students who have taken a gap year, etc)

It is expected that these students will register with the Australian Council of Educational Research (ACER) to sit the UMAT in 2012 once registrations open. The RDWA may request proof of registration to confirm the applicant's attendance at this workshop. There are limited places available for applicants to other health sciences courses requiring the UMAT for admission, as well as Year 11 students.

Please note – Registration does not guarantee a spot to participate in a workshop. You will receive an email upon receipt of registration form. Confirmation letters will be sent to you at approximately 1 to 2 months prior to the workshop. Students will be notified if they are not eligible to attend a workshop.

For participants under 18 years of age, RDWA will send out a consent form and medical information form to be completed and returned by a parent/guardian before attending the workshop.

Thinking about the direction of your medical career? The RDWA will be at the SA Medical Careers Expo on 23 May, and we'd love to talk to you about working in rural South Australia.

The SA Medical Careers Expo will provide medical students, interns, trainee medical officers and international medical graduates with the opportunity to explore future career pathways through talking to South Australia’s medical industry leaders and specialists.

medSPACE Ready: What you need to know about medical school

What

A three-day residential workshop in Adelaide for rural high school students interested in studying medicine.

The workshop aims to:

•   orient students to the university campuses
•   give students the opportunity to talk to medical students and medical practitioners
•   provide information and support to rural students who want to do medicine.
•   provide practical experience through clinical skills stations

Who

Year 10 and 11 students attending a rural high school in SA.

Cost

Free – funded by the RDWA. Covers travel, accommodation and all meals during the residential workshop. Does not include travel to and from Adelaide, and/or accommodation outside the formal program.

The 3 day program includes:

•   An Introduction to UMAT Workshop
•   An orientation of Flinders University
•   An orientation of the University of Adelaide
•   Networking and social activities

EduCARE: GP Orientation Weekend

The objectives are:

Improve knowledge of aboriginal health issues and cultural safety for GP's.
Identify strategies to achieve successful self-management skills and work/life balance.
Develop strategies to ensure effective communication skills for living and working in Australia.
Improve knowledge of the services of the Rural Doctors Workforce Agency and Fellowship support.
Increase knowledge of sexual and cross cultural health for women in a primary care setting.
Increase patient safety through identification of best practice guidelines around effective history taking and documentation.

This program is open to IMGs who have arrived in Australia in the past 12 months.

The Orientation Weekend is recognised by the RACGP QA & CPD and ACRRM PDP Programs (point allocation is not guaranteed and is subject to review by RACGP and ACRRM).

The Orientation Weekend is fully funded by the Rural Doctors Workforce Agency through the State Department of Health.

Accommodation is provided by the RDWA for the doctor and their spouse for two nights (Friday and Saturday), as well as breakfast. Some costs may be incurred by the doctor for accommodation and breakfast for children.

Doctors may be able to claim their travel through the CPD Subsidy.
