Overseas doctors seeking work as a doctor in rural South Australia

The Rural Doctors Workforce Agency is a not for profit government funded organisation, managed by a board of doctors.  We understand and respect the needs and obligations of doctors and their families and have supported rural doctors for over 10 years.  We welcome all applications and enquiries from International Medical Graduates (IMGs) regarding medical practitioner vacancies in rural areas of South Australia.

The RDWA is able to offer a first class recruitment and retention service that is the envy of its competitors around Australia.  Doctors seeking work in rural South Australia, and who are determined to be eligible, are encouraged to visit with their spouses with all expenses met including airfares and accommodation during their stay.  A substantial relocation grant of up to $10,000 is made available as is a grant of $3,000 for financial and legal aid.  Assistance is provided by skilled recruitment officers to deal with immigration and registration processes and a comprehensive orientation plan is put in place for the new doctor on their arrival.

In addition, the RDWA maintains a range of initiatives and support programs as part of its broader retention strategy.  This retention strategy includes significant funding for on going personal, professional and family support including pre-school child care grant; spouse employment assistance, legal, financial and business support as well as networking opportunities brokered by the RDWA.  The health and well being of the doctor and their family is also catered for through special GP and family health programs as well as through the availability of the Locum service.

The availability of these products and services enable the RDWA to be positioned as Australia’s number one rural medical recruiter.

National Assessment for IMGs
From 1 July 2008, the Australian Government determined that there would be consistent assessment and registration pathways for IMGs.  The three pathways are the:
• Competent Pathway
• Standard Pathway
• Specialist Pathway.
From 1 February 2010 the RACGP Specialist Pathway is available to eligible overseas trained general practitioners.  This is a new assessment process for doctors who do not hold current Australian medical registration but have recognised general practice qualifications from overseas countries. For information regarding the RACGP Specialist Pathway please click here.

Transition Arrangements
Just recently the RDWA has secured an in-principal agreement from the Medical Board of South Australia and the RACGP to continue a transition process for limited registration for rural Area of Need GP positions.  It is anticipated that a national consistent process using primarily the Specialist Pathway will be in place by July 2010.

Until then, the Medical Board of South Australia will give consideration to applications from doctors who have met the following pre-registration requirements.  These requirements include:
1. English Language proficiency
2. Certificate of Good Standing from your most recent registering body
3. EICS application
4. Completion of a Standarised Test: eg the AMC MCQ or the AMC Certificate of
 Advanced Standing
5. Pre-Employment Interview by an accrediting body.

The RDWA is keen to assist doctors wishing to work in rural South Australia in assessing their suitability to meet limited registration. As a recruitment agency we can match doctors to practices and facilitate the pre-employment interview process. Our recruitment officers will be able to assist you through all pre-registration requirements as well as actively managing your relocation to Australia.
