Interns

Successful completion of the internship year (also known as post graduate year 1 or PGY1) enables doctors to apply for general registration, which is a pre-requisite to entering general practice or other specialty training.  Core components of the PGY1 year are rotations (10 week blocks) of general surgery, general medicine and emergency medicine with acute medical exposure.  Interns are also able to access the Prevocational General Practice Placements Program, which provides a rotation in general practice.

The intern year can be spent in rural location (in Mount Gambier) or a metropolitan hospital undertaking rotations in rural locations. The South Australian Institute of Medical Education and Training (SA IMET) coordinates postgraduate medical training, accredits PGY1 and PGY2 positions and allocates junior medical staff to hospital intern positions.

The RDWA provides interns the opportunity to stay in touch with rural practice throughout their intern year, and as they prepare to apply for specialty training (registrar position).

Our RDWA Intern Activities include the Do it all… Go Rural – Rural GP Career Evening.

Contact our doctors in training team if you would like us to add you to our E-News weekly newsletter, or if you have any questions about practising in rural SA, now or in the future.
