The Practice
Augusta Westside Medical Centre is a group practice providing comprehensive family care. There are three GP’s, one GP Anaesthetist and a practice nurse. The practice is efficiently managed by a Practice manager and the supporting administrative staff.
The main services provided by the practice include Aboriginal health, counselling, emergency medicine, geriatrics, mental health, obstetrics (shared care) and palliative health. The general medical issues in the area include Aboriginal health, aged care and general medicine. There are other private and community owned medical practices in Port Augusta employing 19 doctors from a range of different nationalities.
The Practice operates seven days, Monday to Friday from 8.30am to 6.00pm and on Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holidays from 10am to 1pm and 3pm to 6pm.
The position offers 4 weeks annual leave per year and ten days sick leave. On-call at the surgery is 1 in 3 weekends. After hours call at the Hospital is from 6pm to 8am approximately two days each month depending on doctor numbers in the town.

Port Augusta is approximately 300 km or a 3 and a half hour drive from Adelaide. It takes less than 1 hour to fly to Port Augusta from Adelaide with a service operating twice daily on week days. The population is approximately 14,000 and growing. Port Augusta is nestled between the beautiful Baxter and Flinders Ranges, and Spencer Gulf offers great fishing and water sports.
Port Augusta continues to develop economically, culturally and residentially and retains a relaxed, friendly, country atmosphere. Recently Port Augusta is experiencing an economic boom to the area generating enhanced employment in tourism, construction and in the retail industry. Other industry includes the Power Station and mining.
Port Augusta has 3 medical centres, Port Augusta, Carlton and Westside, plus Pika Wiya Health Centre (Aboriginal Health Clinic), the Hospital, 2 nursing homes, Perretts X-Ray, Mental Health services, Dental services and Allied Health services.
Also located within Port Augusta is The Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS). Port Augusta is one of 14 Flying Doctor bases that serve the healthcare needs of people living in Australia's outback. Opening hours for the RFDS are basically from 10.00am to 3.00pm Monday to Friday.
The Port Augusta Hospital is a large modern facility with intensive care, renal dialysis unit, operating theatres with surgeons and anaesthetists working daily. The 82 acute bed Hospital was opened in December 1997. The hospital is a regional hospital serving Port Augusta and the sparsely populated Flinders and Far North area of South Australia. (Total population serviced by Port Augusta is 20,802). Aboriginal patients from Port Augusta and the remote areas make up 30% of admissions and 37% of occupied bed days.

Recreational clubs and facilities that the town of Port Augusta offers include golfing, football, netball, swimming, horse riding, tennis courts, art gallery, museum, library, wine tasting, heritage walks and shopping.
Childcare facilities in Port Augusta include two child care centres, a family day care centre and after hours school care is also available. There are seven primary schools in Port Augusta with six being from reception year up to Year 12 and one being reception year up to year ten and is 98% Aboriginal. There are two high schools, one is public and split into two campuses and the other is a catholic school from reception year to Year 12.
