Excellent housing owned by the Health Advisory Council is available in both Booleroo and Orroroo townships at a subsidised rental rate. Rent is waived on the doctor’s residence for the initial 3 months.
The Practice
The Booleroo and Orroroo Medical Practice operates with GPs consulting across the two sites and also provides clinical services to the nearby towns of Wirrabara and Wilmington.
Currently there are two resident doctors, both of whom have vast experience and are skilled in emergency medicine and in general practice. One has interests in chronic disease management and the diagnosis and treatment of skin cancers and one is skilled in anaesthetics, and has interest in women’s health, mental health and obstetrics.
The premises and facilities at both sites are modern and well equipped and all maintenance and repairs are provided by the local hospitals.
The Booleroo and Orroroo Medical Practice is a well established, accredited practice working collaboratively with the local Hospitals and Community Services. The practice provides healthcare of the highest professional standard with support from well trained practice nurses and administration staff, and a friendly caring working environment that caters for the individual needs of GPs and employers.
The Booleroo and Orroroo Medical Practice aims to provide a sustainable high quality medical service and standard of patient care to meet the changing needs of the Booleroo and Orroroo Communities, by incorporating a holistic approach toward diagnosis, management and proactive prevention of illness and diseases.
Our vision is to provide and maintain attractive, supportive and flexible workplace for rural GPs with an option to introduce the teaching and supervision of Registrars.
The Practice is staffed by one Practice Manager, 5 part-time administration staff and 3 part-time Practice Nurses. The Practice Manager’s role is to support the GPs and staff, manage finance, organise rosters, arrange locum relief and ensure the smooth daily running of the practices.
The Practice Nurses provide a broad range of nursing services including immunisations, venu-puncture, maintaining the recall system, preparation of care plans, spirometry, blood pressure monitoring, INRs and wound dressings. The Practice Nurses have excellent clinical skills to assist the GPs including an extensive knowledge of chronic disease management and preventative health management. The administration staff are responsible for customer service, booking appointments, billing, scanning and daily office duties.

The main services provided by the Practice are palliative health, counselling, emergency medicine, geriatrics, mental health, population health and minor procedures.
The operating hours are: Monday to Friday - 9.00am to 5.00pm. The after hours commitment for Booleroo and Orroroo hospitals and Aged Care Facilities is shared on an equitable basis between the contracted doctors through a roster system. Due to the proximity of the hospitals, the after hours can be provided from either town for both locations to reduce the commitment on behalf of the GPs.
The full-time doctor is entitled to 4 weeks leave, and may be eligible for locum support provided by the RDWA. The GPs provide mutual support for short periods of absence as required.
Discover Booleroo and Orroroo
Booleroo Centre and Orroroo are both located approximately 265 km north of Adelaide, and 31kms apart. Orroroo is situated on the crossroads of Sydney to Perth Highway and Adelaide to Blinman Highway.
Orroroo is a picturesque town with a population of approximately 900 people, plus surrounding areas. Situated in the Flinders Ranges, Orroroo and nearby Carrieton boast some of the region’s most spectacular views and places of interest, attractive to tourists who visit to enjoy bushwalking, bike riding and four wheel driving. Tourists have the option of staying in the popular Orroroo Caravan Park, Hotel/Motel accommodation, or one of the many lovely B&B residences.
An attractive main street offers excellent local business including two hotels, clothes shop, pharmacy, supermarket, banks, butcher, fruit and veg, giftware and two quality cafes.
Booleroo Centre is a town of approx 700 people within the District Council of Mt Remarkable. The practice services a wide geographic area which includes both District Council of Mt Remarkable and District Council of Orroroo/Carrieton and a combined population of up to 4,000 people. Booleroo is a pleasant service based town, situated close to the Southern Flinders Ranges which is a popular tourist destination for off road cycling, bush walking, and camping. Booleroo has good local businesses including a butcher, supermarket, agricultural supplier, pharmacy, hairdresser and bank.
The larger regional towns of Port Pirie and Port Augusta are within an hour’s travel of both towns and provide a wider range of retail outlets and entertainment and dining options.
The districts of Booleroo and Orroroo are predominantly used for farming cereal crops, sheep and cattle as well as a number of orchards, vineyards and olive groves. In addition to traditional occupations, there are also a number of agricultural engineering enterprises, schools, builders and local businesses who provide significant employment opportunities. Orroroo has a lucrative, well renowned kangaroo processing plant. Both towns are in close access to recent mining site activity and expansion.
In Orroroo there is an 18 bed ACHS accredited Hospital, including 8 acute beds and 10 residential aged care beds. Services provided include acute medical, post surgical, post natal, transitional care packages, palliative care and 24 hour emergency services. There is also a 16 bed, accredited Commonwealth Residential Aged Care facility. Diverse respite care and Community Health Services are provided within the Orroroo community. A pharmacy is located within a close proximity to the medical centre.
The Booleroo Health Service includes a modern, well equipped 23 bed ACHS accredited hospital incorporating acute, surgical, A&E, palliative and aged care. The health service which is situated alongside the Booleroo Medical Centre also has an active Community Health Team with Community Nurses and visiting allied health professionals. A pharmacy is located immediately adjacent the medical centre. Early intervention programs are provided by a Rural Health Team based within the health service. A private 30 bed Residential aged care facility is located within close proximity to the medical practice and hospital.
Both Booleroo and Orroroo Hospitals are fully equipped with diagnostic equipment including i-stat & troponin point of care testing, portable ultrasound, cardiac monitor/defibrillator with pacing capabilities and fully equipped emergency departments. A large number of nursing staff are trained in advanced life support, rural and remote x-ray, emergency management and posses excellent triage assessment and clinical skills including IV cannulation and suturing competencies,
The medical practice operates with in CHSA Mid North Cluster, this includes:

Orroroo and Booleroo both have excellent public, co-educational area schools for children from Reception up to Year 12. Pre-school education and day care facilities are also available.
Sport is important within our communities and our towns are proud of their competitive football, netball, tennis and cricket clubs. Alternative recreational facilities and clubs include dirt circuit motor racing, camp drafting, lawn bowls, swimming, shooting, golf and darts. Both towns are fortunate to have excellent recreational facilities including sporting complexes, community gymnasiums and swimming pools. Orroroo are hosting the State Masters Games in 2013
Within close proximity of Orroroo are walking and cycling trails which follow the Pekina Creek and show points of interest including The Giant Gum Tree, Rock Poem, and the Orroroo Reservoir. The Horseshoe and Bendleby Ranges are popular tourism and camping destinations in the scenic ranges surrounding Orroroo and provide the opportunity for off road 4 wheel driving.
Booleroo Centre is located close to Melrose which is a picturesque historical town at the base of Mount Remarkable, popular for camping and now hosts many mountain bike events. Booleroo is known for an annual Steam and Traction event exhibiting all forms of historical farm and steam machinery.
Orroroo and Booleroo are situated at the gateway to the both the Southern and Northern Flinders Ranges with Port Augusta, Wilpena Pound and Clare Valley all only 1-2 hour’s drive away.
