Rural Emergency Skills Program (RESP)

RDWA’s RESP is the premier emergency skills program for rural medical practitioners who provide emergency services in rural South Australia.

RESP is delivered by the Royal Flying Doctor Service and LearnEM at 10 rural locations each year.

RESP is crucial to general practitioners who are practising emergency medicine in rural public hospitals.  Country Health SA looks to successful completion of RESP as a requisite to being credentialed to deliver emergency services in the local hospital.

The comprehensive RESP course program uses adult learning methodology and technology to deliver the most up to date, evidence based approach to managing emergency presentations.

At the end of the evening and full day course, each participant is formally assessed on their ability to demonstrate:

  • Stabilisation of cervical spine, use of cervical collar, awareness of when alternatives are required  and of what the alternatives comprise
  • Management of airways and breathing problems including intubation, chest drains and tension  pneumothorax
  • Basic CPR including airways assessment and management
  • Advanced CPR including defibrillation, pacing, intubation/LMA/cricothyroidotomy and ventilation.with a specific emphasis on general practitioners

The course is available at no cost to eligible doctors.  Participants pay for their own travel and accommodation, and part subsidy may be claimable through the RDWA Professional Support subsidy.  In addition, eligible doctors may be able to apply for the Rural Training Grant through RACGP or ACRRM.

The course is recognised by the RACGP QA & CPD and ACRRM PDP Programs, and currently receives 40 Category 1 points in the RACGP QA & CPD Program, 10 ALS points, 30 PRPD + 30 PRPD Anaesthetics MOPS points and 30 PRPD Emergency Medicine points in the ACRRM PD Program.
