Rural Emergency Skills Program (RESP)
What is it?
The emergency medicine skills program for rural South Australia aims to enhance the knowledge and skills in the management of emergency medical presentations for rural and remote health professionals in South Australia, with a specific emphasis on general practitioners.
On completion of the course, the course facilitator will assess each participant on their ability to successfully demonstrate the following essential competencies:
Stabilisation of cervical spine, use of cervical collar, awareness of when alternatives are required and of what the alternatives comprise;
Management of airways and breathing problems including intubation, chest drains and tension pneumothorax;
Basic CPR including airways assessment and management;
Advanced CPR including defibrillation, pacing, intubation/LMA/cricothyroidotomy and ventilation.

Who can apply?
The program is targeted at medical practitioners in the first instance, and nursing and other health professionals involved in emergency medicine should course places permit.
How Much?
The course registration is fully funded by Rural Doctors Workforce Agency through the South Australian Department of Health. Travel and accommodation costs may be claimed through the Rural Doctors Workforce Agency CPD subsidy .
No subsidy is payable for loss of earnings, however, eligible doctors may be able to apply for the Medicare Grant through RACGP or ACRRM
Registered with RACGP or ACRRM
The course is recognised by the RACGP QA & CPD and ACRRM PDP Programs (point allocation is not guaranteed and is subject to review by RACGP & ACRRM).
This course is accredited with ACRRM PDP for 30 Extended Skills Points and 40 RACGP QA & CPD points (Category 1). The course is also accredited for 50 JCCA MOPS points.
Pre Reading
The RFDS will email online learning modules to be completed prior to attending.
The online learning modules are approximately 4 hours.
