Work towards Fellowship with this GP vacancy in Spectacular Coastal City

Two full time positions are available for VR or non-VR GPs passionate about rural, remote and Aboriginal health to provide medical services to the friendly and welcoming community in Whyalla. 

The Role

Based in Whyalla, these exciting roles offer the opportunity to work in either or both of the practices, Doctors On Playford and Doctors At Westland. You will love the opportunity to provide services to a patient population comprising all age groups, from newborn to over 75 years, including the opportunity to provide Nursing Home care as part of the role.

With a long standing reputation of supporting GPs to Fellowship, the practices are interested in receiving applications from International Medical Graduates who may require supervision.

Fellowed GPs are also able to add diversity to their practise by participating in the supervision of medical students and GP Registrars.

Standard work hours include up to 10 sessions per week during consulting hours, Monday to Friday, 9am – 5.30pm with GP after hours services provided on a Saturday and Sunday via a shared roster.

As an essential member of this rural team of VR GPs this position provides on-call medical services to the Whyalla Hospital for emergency presentations after hours as part of a shared on-call roster with other GPs in the town.

Essential Criteria

  • MBBS or equivalent
  • Credentials as a General Practitioner in the clinical domain of GP Medicine (emergency medicine) or the ability to gain credentials

A postgraduate qualification relevant to general practice (e.g. Diploma of Child Health) is desirable but not essential.

The Practice

Supported by an experienced team of  GPs, practice nurses and administrative staff, visiting specialist services include:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Endocrinology
  • Psychology
  • Psychiatry
  • Paediatrics
  • Reproductive medicine
  • Audiology
  • Cardiology

The Whyalla Hospital is an 80 bed facility with a full-time physician and 2 full-time general surgeons; two anaesthetists; a resident gynaecologist and two resident orthopaedic surgeons, as well as a range of visiting specialists.

Services provided include:

  • 24-hour accident and emergency services
  • General medical and specialist surgical care
  • Anaesthetic, cardiac, obstetric, and neonatal services
  • Chemotherapy and renal dialysis services
  • Regional cancer resource centre
  • Rehabilitation services
  • Integrated mental health services
  • Stroke services

Located on Eyre Peninsula’s Spencer Gulf, Whyalla is an important hub and the region’s biggest city for retail shopping. Whyalla boasts a warm climate, accessible ocean shores and saltwater fishing.  With a population of nearly 22,000, Whyalla offers both industrial and nature-based experiences and is known for its rugged red desert scapes and national parks, white sandy beaches, and abundant marine life. Go snorkelling with giant cuttlefish, meet the dolphins at the local marina, or head out fishing and catch your supper. There’s always plenty to see and do in this bustling hub.
