medSPACE Program

medSPACE Residential Workshop

Year 10 and 11 Students
RDWA’s medSPACE Residential Workshop is a three-day camp held in July each year to support rural high school students to pursue their dream of studying medicine.

Workshop participants will tour Flinders University and the University of Adelaide, where you'll learn about the courses available, and the Undergraduate Medicine and Health Sciences Admission Test (UMAT), including key dates, resources and contacts. There will be practical clinical sessions and you will meet current medical students.

Fifty rural background students will be offered places to attend the workshop, which is held in Adelaide. Qualified staff will provide 24 hour supervision. Accommodation, meals and travel, to and from the workshop, are all provided by the RDWA.

If you are in year 10 or 11 at a rural high school or boarding college and your hometown is in rural South Australia, then this workshop may be for you.

The next medSPACE Residential Workshop will be held 11-13 July 2017.

Applications for this workshop have closed. If you require more information please contact the RDWA.

medSPACE UMAT Preparation and Interview Skills Support Programs

Year 12 Students
The RDWA’s medSPACE Program provides the opportunity for rural background year 12 students to access online resources and to take part in preparation workshops for the Undergraduate Medicine and Health Sciences Admissions Test (UMAT) and the interview components of the admissions process when applying for undergraduate medicine.

The RDWA also offers this support to rural background students who are seeking transfer to medicine and to rural background applicants for medicine who have taken a gap year.

Rural students considering a career in dentistry are also invited to register for the UMAT Preparation and Interview Skills Support Programs.

UMAT preparation
The Undergraduate Medicine and Health Sciences Admissions Test (UMAT) is the first component to be completed when applying for medicine. RDWA’s medSPACE UMAT Preparation Support Program is for students who have a rural background and need to sit the UMAT for admission into university.

Through the support offered, students can attend a comprehensive two-day workshop. The workshop covers pathways into university, information, tips and strategies for approaching the UMAT questions, and an opportunity to sit a practice UMAT and receive feedback on the results.

The RDWA workshops for 2017 were held in Whyalla, Adelaide and Mount Gambier throughout January.

In addition to the workshop, RDWA’s medSPACE UMAT Preparation Support Program also provides students with a distance learning package including practice exams, guides, games and drills for students to work through and develop their UMAT performance.

To apply for the medSPACE UMAT Preparation Support Program you need to be a student who has a rural South Australian background and are sitting the UMAT in 2017.

Interview Skills
Along with the UMAT and your Academic score (ATAR, IB or GPA), the interview is the third important component when applying for medicine.

The RDWA has developed the medSPACE Interview Support website where you’ll find a series of short videos by Communications Skills expert, Emma Liggins, to help you prepare for the interview.

This site is only available to South Australian rural background students who are applying for medicine at university.
