RESP Obstetrics

Alongside RDWA’s RESP, and facilitated by long-time training partner Learn EM, the new RESP Obstetrics offers funded emergency education to GP Proceduralists offering Obstetric services to any of the six Regional Local Health Networks in SA.

RESP Obstetrics will focus on management of obstetric emergencies, newborn resuscitation, neonatal emergencies, extended skills in using bedside ultrasound and simulation to consolidate skills for management of obstetric and neonatal emergencies.

At the completion of the workshop the participant should be able to: 

  • Outline the differential diagnosis, assessment and management of the pregnant patient presenting with bleeding and/or uterine pain in late pregnancy.
  • Describe the clinical features and management of severe pre-eclampsia / eclampsia, PPROM, cord prolapse, shoulder dystocia, unexpected breech delivery and PPH
  • Describe the clinical features, differential diagnosis, clinical assessment and management priorities in the neonate presenting with serious illness.
  • Demonstrate the procedure for life support in the newborn and post resuscitation management
  • Demonstrate an understanding of team approach, leadership, communication strategies required for managing obstetric and neonatal emergencies.
  • Describe the role of bedside ultrasound and ultrasound findings in first trimester pregnancy, abnormal intrauterine pregnancy, ectopic pregnancy and late pregnancy/early labour.

RESP Obstetrics is accredited for 40 Cat 1 RACGP points and 30 PRPD + 30 points MOPS with ACCRM. The workshop meets the criteria for the Rural Procedural Grant for Emergency Medicine, Anaesthesia, Surgery and Obstetrics.

If you are offered and accept a fully funded position, you will be agreeing to meet the conditions of access which includes agreeing to pay for the cost of a position, if you do not complete all requirements.  The terms of acceptance are detailed on the application form.
