Ride Along Program

RFDS and RDWA give South Australian medical and nursing students an adventurous start to rural health by experiencing life as an RFDS flight crew member with the Ride Along Program.

This popular experience has supported almost 2,000 medical, nursing and midwifery students to spend a day on an RFDS service flight to experience real rural and remote healthcare. This partnership is unique to South Australia and has been running for more than 20 years.

Each of the South Australian universities have an allocated four-month period with RFDS, during which program participants can join a Saturday or Sunday service flight.

Applications are now closed while students from the University of South Australia complete their flight attachments.

Eligibility

There are up to 34 places available.

If there are more applications than places available, preference will be given to students who have not previously been on an attachment flight.

To apply, students must be:

  • Over 18 years of age
  • A second or third year student in medicine, nursing or midwifery
  • A university rural health club member
  • Able to attend the compulsory orientation session at Rural Doctors Workforce Agency office, Mile End
  • Available for at least two Saturdays and Sundays during the four month period allocated to your university.

Successful applicants must attend the compulsory orientation session at Rural Doctors Workforce Agency office, Mile End while the RFDS Base at Adelaide Airport is under renovation.

At the orientation session, an RFDS representative will describe the flight attachment and rostering process in detail, and outline expectations of students participating in the program. Students will need to accept the terms described by the RFDS to participate in the flight.

Apply

Applications are now closed while students from the University of South Australia complete their flight attachments.
