Ride Along Program

RFDS and RDWA are delighted that the Ride Along Program has recommenced after it was suspended due to COVID.

About the Program

Ride Along provides first and second year medicine, nursing and midwifery students at South Australia’s universities the opportunity to ‘ride along’ on an RFDS flight.

Joining the RFDS for a one-day observational attachment, you will have the opportunity to shadow and observe a day in the life of a RFDS flight nurse.

This program has been changing hearts and minds for more than 20 years, and for many is the foundational experience that influences the doctors, nurses and midwives of tomorrow to choose rural careers.

The RFDS-RDWA Ride-Along is a unique opportunity to truly experience the breadth of rural health care in South Australia.

Each of the three universities is allocated a dedicated period during which time eligible students can be offered a Saturday or Sunday flight.

Applications are opened for each university at different times of the year.

Currently, we are calling for applications from students at Flinders University.

To be eligible to be considered for this program you will need to be:

  • Over 18 years at the time of the application; and
  • A first or second year student in medicine, nursing or midwifery; and
  • A member of the Flinders University Rural Health Society (or be prepared to be a member); and
  • Able to attend the compulsory orientation session at the RFDS Base at 5.30pm Tuesday 12 July 2022; and
  • Available for at least two Saturdays and Sundays between 16 July and 23 October 2022; and
  • Accept the privacy consents for RDWA.

If you can meet all these criteria and would like to apply, please complete the application form.

Tuesday 12 July 2022 – Orientation at the RFDS Base

Observational attachments will take place between Saturday 16 July and Sunday 23 October 2022.

Important Information

Where we receive more applications that places available, we randomly select from eligible applications.  This is not a merit based selection, it is based on chance where eligible applications are placed into a draw that is conducted by RDWA.

You will be advised of the outcome of the application by Tuesday 5 July 2022, one week prior to the orientation session.

If you are offered a place on Ride Along, you will be required to also meet RFDS participation consents and declarations.

If you meet the eligibility criteria apply now for your opportunity to join this valuable experience.
