RFDS and RDWA's Ride Along Program

About the Program

RFDS and RDWA have been supporting medical and nursing student at SA’s three universities to have a great adventure early in their uni studies by joining an RFDS service flight with the flight nurse on a Saturday or Sunday.

It has been a highlight for more than 1,000 students who rise at dawn, eagerly wait for the call to join the flight – and then spend the day right in the middle of the action.

So, if you are a first or second year medicine, nursing or midwifery student here in SA, you can apply for one of 30 places when it is your uni’s turn to be invited.

The RFDS-RDWA Ride-Along is a unique opportunity to truly experience rural and remote health care in SA.

Applications are opened for each university at different times of the year.

We are currently supporting Flinders University students’ attachments.

Early in 2024, we will call for applications from UniSA students. If you’d like us to let you know when that offer is open, email us at the contact details below.

Successful applicants must attend the one-off orientation session at the RFDS hangar.

Eligibility

To be eligible to apply for the current opportunity you will be:

  • Over 18 years
  • A first or second year student in medicine or nursing at your SA university;
  • A member of your university’s rural health club, or interested in joining the rural club;
  • able to attend the compulsory orientation session at the RFDS Base on the specified date; and
  • Available for at least two Saturdays and Sundays between four-month period allocated to your university.

The online form will have all the privacy and information consent and applicant declarations you will need to complete.

If you are selected, RFDS will provide full details of the terms and conditions of participating in a flight at the orientation session. You will be free to accept the terms or not accept them. If you do not wish to accept the terms you will not be able to participate in the flight.

Apply

Email us if you’d like to let you know when applications open later this year.

Important Information

There are up to 30 places available for each university cohort.

This is not a merit based selection, however we will give preference to applicants who have not previously been on an attachment flight.

If we receive more than 30 applications, we will randomly select participants by a draw.
