Rural SA Locum Program

About the Program

The Rural SA Locum Program makes it as easy as possible for you as a rural GP to plan your leave, knowing your communities are in safe hands while you take a well-deserved break.

RDWA’s Rural SA Locum Program can provide you with locum relief for planned leave.  Relieving locums are highly skilled GPs with significant rural experience, ensuring SA’s rural communities can continue to access local medical care.

For some rural locations, GP Proceduralists are available to support continuity of obstetric or anaesthetic services.

The program supports you by:

  • Ensuring billings generated by the Locum stay with you so you receive income even when you are on holiday
  • Employing high quality GPs with extensive rural experience
  • Paying travel and accommodation for the locum during the placement
  • Arranging for provider numbers; and
  • Supporting the locum throughout the placement.

In times of emergency RDWA’s Locum support is available to aid communities’ continued access to medical services.

Eligibility

You can apply for locum support through the Rural SA Locum Program if you:

  • have lived and worked in a rural SA location (MM 2-7) for at least the last 12 months continuously
  • provide more than seven general practice consultation sessions per week to your local community.

A rural community is a location that is listed as MM 2-7 within the Modified Monash Model (MM). You can check if your home address is in MM 2-7 by using the on-line tool here: Modified Monash Model.

Eligibility to apply for a locum is determined by number of GPs in the town and the structure of emergency service for the local public hospital.

For more information on eligibility please contact the RDWA locum team.

Important Information

For priority classifications, locum placements are provided at no cost.

For general locum placements, the cost per placement week is heavily subsidised, and participating GPs are asked to make a contribution of as little as 30% of the total cost.

Locum support is customised to your needs and the needs of your community. Please contact us for more information on what support is available to you.
